Surviving 2020: Looking Back, Moving Forward

We may not agree on every point in life, but we most certainly can agree 2020 has been a year like no other for the world. Thrust into the whirlwind of a global pandemic, we’ve learned to be more adaptable, more creative, and more awakened than before. We have learned to incorporate new terms into our daily lives like lockdown, quarantine, and social distancing. We have learned to use new hashtags in our social media posts like #StayHomeStaySafe, #LockdownNow, #FlattenTheCurve, #SixFeetApart, and #TogetherAtHome. And above all else, we learned to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

While the pandemic brought on many challenges, it also presented us with the opportunity to reconnect, realign, and better understand not only those around us but ourselves. Walks in the park became more meaningful. Family night became a thing of the present rather than the past. We discovered how our college degrees became most helpful during times of homeschooling. And above all else, we realized a bit more about humanity while being apart. Allowing ourselves to be human should never take a back seat.

For me, my sense of being has shifted. No more will I take life for granted. No more will I allow the hustle and bustle to get in the way of what is most important. Instead, I will enjoy the touch of a small hand in mine as we go for a walk. The warmth of a hug. The bliss of a smile. The sweetness of laughter. My life will never go back the way it was pre-pandemic, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Here is my challenge to you. Think deeply about the past year and unearth every point on the spectrum. In other words, find the “gray” in between the black and white. For it is here, where you’ll discover not gray, but rather a radiance of color. Count each blessing.

2020, as sad as it has been, was not all doom and gloom. Valuable lessons were taught; what we decide to do with them can bring us much joy in 2021 and beyond. Let us embrace it.

I wish you all peaceful, happy days filled with family, friends, love, and laughter. Cheers to a New Year! Make it epic.

All My Love,

Wendi
